RFD Celebrates National Farmers’ Market Week
This week, August 3rd-9th, 2014 is declared as National Farmers Market Week. This official proclamation by the USDA, signed by Secretary Vilsack, marks the 15th Annual National Farmers’ Market Week – allowing us to take a moment out of our busy lives to recognize the importance of local farmers and be grateful for having access to delicious, quality food!
Over the years, I have taken pleasure in attending the weekly farmers’ markets Los Angeles has to offer. With 8,268 markets to date, California is the U.S. leader in hosting farmers’ markets! Every time I walk my local markets, I feel grateful to for the bounty of the beautiful, local, flavor-bursting organic produce.
My direct interaction with farmers, while indulging a plethora of seasonal organic fruits and veg, has greatly influenced both my personal life and career. Thus, out of my many farmers’ market explorations throughout my first years in LA blossomed my first restaurant Real Food Daily. This Santa Monica gem, (because it still shines after 21 years!), continues to support our Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. Several times a year, RFD sells our creative, fresh, organic, plant-based cuisine to SaMo residents and travelers alike. See me explore the fresh produce at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market!
RFD Seasonal Menu
In this modern world of processed foods, our bodies really crave the simple, clean food that we evolutionarily were meant to eat. At RFD, we hope to expose the public to whole, plant-based cuisine, highlighting seasonal produce and prove that healthy food is rather not bland, but INCREDIBLY potent and flavorful.
With the help of my seasoned, (no pun intended!) Culinary Director, Tara Punzone and talented Executive Pastry Chef, Anthony Nigro, we’ve devised perfect seasonal summer treats for you.
On my menu this summer:
-Under the Tahitian Moon

We’ve recently expanded to the South Pasadena Farmers’ Market, as we opened up our third RFD location in the South Lake District of Pasadena two years ago!
I wanted to take this blog post to THANK the incredibly genuine farm families that have helped contribute to RFD’s success from its inception twenty-one years ago!

A Note on Organic
New fascinating information about how organic produce has more nutrients than gmo/pesticide infected produce has been buzzing in the news lately. From lower amounts of pesticide toxins to increase in antioxidants, organic is the way to go. However, for those who cannot access entirely organic, I recommend picking and choosing based upon The Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen List.
When going through the complexity of healthy food choices, I always like to refer to Michael Pollan who wrote, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. That, more or less, is the short answer to the supposedly incredibly complicated and confusing question of what we humans should eat in order to be maximally healthy.”
With these tips in mind, don’t forget to just eat REAL FOOD. Daily.
