Who’s Eating @ RFD & Why?
Featured RFD Eater
We LOVE Real Food Daily! Who knew vegan food could be so delicious? My favorite meal is the Tacos. Nikki’s favorite is the Club Sandwich. She can never get over how that vegan bacon is so tasty. The super cool thing is that our 10 year old son loves to go there as well. He started out loving the Seitan sticks on the kids menu but has since graduated to become a Taco fan as well. He even takes the doggy bag to school for lunch the next day! We love that RFD has encouraged our child to be conscious about what he eats AND enjoy it. In a class letter writing project, he wrote to the Santa Monica school district asking for healthier lunches in the school cafeteria. He suggested Anne’s Seitan sticks with carrots.
We also got the cookbook and all the recipies are spectacular! I love the way I feel after eating at RFD. Here’s the thing…we get great tasting meals that make our bodies feel nourished. And how cool is it when your kid suggests a vegan night out!?
Thanks RFD – We are fans for life!!!

Who eats at Real Food Daily (RFD)? Lots of folks do—about 6,000 of them every week, in fact. Whether you’re a committed vegan or just interested in a plant-based meal on occasion, you’re welcome at our table. Pull up a chair and look around; all sorts of people come to RFD to satisfy their hunger for great food without compromise—they know that here, their ethical, health, environmental, and religious beliefs aren’t at stake when they order a meal. Browse the list of overlapping categories, and click here to let us know why YOU eat at RFD.
- Organic Eaters. Organic foods are those grown without the use of conventional pesticides or fertilizers. People seek out organic foods because they want food that supports good health, not food with chemicals that wind up in the body and in the world’s water supply. Here at RFD, nearly all of the produce we use comes from local organic farms.
- Vegans. Vegans are the strictest of vegetarians; they don’t eat any meat, fowl, fish, dairy, eggs, or honey. RFD serves a 100-percent vegan menu, so go ahead: Order anything. Pretty liberating, isn’t it? With such menu staples as Fettuccini Alfredo (spinach fettuccini with creamy Alfredo sauce, roasted red peppers, and broccoli) and Tac-o’ The Town (corn tortillas, seasoned seitan, guacamole, pico, and tofu sour cream), vegans—and many others—really feel the love at RFD.
- Vegetarians. Vegetarians come in many stripes: Some eat dairy products (lacto-vegetarians), while others eat eggs (ovo-vegetarians), and probably even more eat both (lacto-ovo vegetarians). Some people who identify themselves as vegetarians eat fish (pesce-vegetarians) or poultry on occasion, too, as well as those who are vegetarian except on major holidays. Or weekends. Or when it’s inconvenient. While we jokingly call these “L.A. vegetarians,” we support everyone’s efforts to incorporate plant-based meals into their diet, whether it’s all the time or just sometimes.
- Macrobiotic Dieters. The macrobiotic diet is based on the principles of yin and yang, and balancing the body between those extremes. It’s basically a vegetarian diet of grains, vegetables, and beans (sometimes with a little fish incorporated) that’s high-fiber, low-fat, and organic, with an emphasis on chewing well. RFD began as a macrobiotic restaurant, and we still plan much of our menu around these Eastern ideas. Stop by for our Real Food Meal, a perfectly balanced plate of macrobiotic vegan foods.
- Religious and Spiritual Followers. RFD is kosher-certified; in fact, Rabbi Dr. Yehudah Bukspan, one of the first rabbis to certify restaurants in Los Angeles, supervises us for kosher compliance. Besides addressing the Jewish community’s desire for kosher foods, we also meet the criteria of many other spiritual practices that advise their followers to eat low on the food chain or to follow a vegetarian diet—Buddhists and Sikhs Hala.
- Health and Wellness Dieters. RFD doesn’t use any animal products, animal by-products, or artificial trans fats, so our food has no cholesterol; that’s why many western medical doctors recommend RFD as a place for a heart-healthy diet, which can help reduce risk for heart disease, strokes, and high blood pressure. Dietitians who counsel clients to eat lower on the food chain and eliminate refined sugars, fats, and sodium often refer patients to RFD. We’re proud to support the dietary goals of our customers, whether they’re trying to lose weight or just live more healthfully.
- Animal Rights Advocates. Following a vegan or vegetarian diet is a meaningful way to fight the cruelty of slaughterhouses and factory farms. With the help of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), a strong movement of animal rights activists has grown up in the past decade, not only adopting meatless diets, but also working to end animal cruelty in laboratories and beyond. They come to RFD because we don’t use any animal products, and we know they also love us because we make doing the right thing so delicious.
- Socially Responsible Consumers. Concerned with your carbon footprint? Adopting a meatless diet makes a bigger difference than driving a hybrid car (and it’s a lot cheaper, too): A United Nations report established that rearing cattle produces more greenhouse gases than transportation does. It’s no wonder, then, that the UN has recommended one meatless day a week as a means to combat climate change. Socially responsible consumers are increasingly aware that meatless meals are an easy and inexpensive way to put their beliefs into action.
- Environmentalists. The livestock industry contributes not only to climate change, but also to deforestation, loss of topsoil, and land degradation; raising plants is far more sustainable than raising animals as food. In addition to sourcing organic produce locally (and in doing so, avoiding the environmental costs of polluting fertilizers, pesticides, and long-distance shipping), we also use a reverse-osmosis water filtration system that allows us to serve healthy, safe, clean, and fantastic-tasting water that hasn’t been stored in plastic bottles and trucked in.
- Those with Food Allergies. At RFD, we’re meticulous about our food, and all of that careful attention translates well to accommodating customers with a variety of food allergies—restrictions that can make dining out in less evolved establishments difficult, at best. Let your server know about any food allergies you have, and they’ll work with you to find safe and delicious choices, from gluten-free pancakes to gluten-free pizza. And remember that for those with only a dairy or egg allergy, the entire menu is safe.
- Foodies. Some diners come to RFD because they have an adventurous palate, and because they appreciate the Slow Food movement that we embrace, selecting high-quality ingredients and making nearly everything from scratch. Whether or not they’re vegetarian, foodies come back for our inventive salads, our satisfying main courses, our clever takes on old-fashioned comfort food, our fresh juices, and our delectable desserts—all made in-house.
- Trainers, Yoga Practitioners, and Massage Therapists. People who make it their life’s work to take care of other people’s bodies (as well as their own) especially appreciate the low-calorie, low-fat, low-sugar fare at RFD. They know that we cook with clean, healthy ingredients, making for meals that support their efforts to be well, and they feel good about recommending us to their clients. Eastern health practitioners such as acupuncturists, ayurvedic doctors, and martial artists refer clients to RFD as well.
